Nestled within the philosophy of wabi-sabi, this thoughtfully designed retirement home vividly embodies the homeowners' vision for a lifestyle centered around slow living and shared companionship with their pets. Instead of conventional walls, the architecture features innovative “passageways” that gracefully open up the existing compartments, resulting in a spacious and interconnected communal area that encourages social interaction. At the heart of the design lies a central wooden ceiling axis that seamlessly connects the living room, dining area, and study. This architectural element not only outlines a fluid circulation pattern but also enhances the sense of cohesion throughout the space. Consequently, both residents and their furry companions are free to traverse the home with ease while the narrative of life unfolds amidst a delicate balance of stillness and motion. Moreover, the interplay of light and natural materials is masterfully employed to create rich, subtle layers, which together cultivate a tranquil and inviting wabi-sabi atmosphere. As a result, this retirement home not only serves as a beautiful living space but also as a sanctuary that fosters connection, calm, and a deep appreciation for the passage of time.
The warm and inviting essence of walnut veneer sets the foundation throughout the space, creating a cozy atmosphere. Meanwhile, elements like microcement, artistic coatings, and stone veneer come together harmoniously, forming a natural texture that embodies the principles of wabi-sabi. As visitors enter the home, they will be greeted by an entryway that showcases a walk-in closet adorned with full-height storage cabinets. This thoughtful design fosters a sense of order and ritual, enhancing the experience of returning home. In the living room, attention is immediately drawn to the focal wall, where light gray mineral paint contrasts beautifully with a stone-clad niche. This juxtaposition creates an engaging dialogue between softness and strength, inviting contemplation and conversation. Just beyond, the island bar, anchored by deep gray stone veneer, offers a versatile space for cooking, wine tasting, and socializing. Here, culinary preparation seamlessly merges with moments of connection and joy among friends and family.
