Soft Landing is a modular sofa designed for the increasingly fluid ways we inhabit the living room. Moving beyond a single forward-facing posture, its generous seat, low armrests, and curved back invite the body to sit, stretch out, lean, turn, rest, or come together. The result is a sofa that accommodates the informal rhythms of everyday life while maintaining a distinct sculptural identity.

The silhouette draws from Taiwan’s mountainous geography and the Central Mountain Range that runs through the island. Rather than reproducing the landscape literally, Soft Landing abstracts its ascending and descending rhythm into a series of upholstered volumes. Through studies in proportion, curvature, and repetition, the rising center back emerged as the defining gesture, while the surrounding elements were progressively simplified. A long horizontal seat grounds the composition, restrained low arms provide a quiet counterpoint, and softened transitions allow the form to build its identity through proportion rather than decorative detail.

Modularity extends this formal language across different scales. From a single middle module to two- and three-seat configurations, the same vocabulary of generous seats, rounded backs, and low arms is repeated and recombined. Modular studies explored how these elements could form different spatial relationships while retaining the recognizable character of Soft Landing, allowing the system to adapt to different spaces and ways of living.

Despite its sculptural presence, Soft Landing is intended to be fully lived in. Performance upholstery responds to homes shared with pets and children, while its proportions accommodate the overlapping activities of contemporary domestic life. It is an expressive object that does not ask everyday life to work around it.

The Central Mountain Range also carries meaning beyond its silhouette. Taiwan’s mountains weaken the force of typhoons as they cross the island, forming a familiar presence that can be understood as a natural guardian. Soft Landing translates this protective quality into the domestic interior: a place to retreat, settle in, and let some of the force of the outside world dissipate. Softness becomes not only a physical quality, but the feeling of having somewhere safe to land.
