Forest Resort Manor: A Japanese Onsen Retreat

Inspired by a "Forest Resort Manor," designer Andrew transforms this high-ceilinged Hong Kong residence into a therapeutic sanctuary reminiscent of a premier Japanese onsen hotel, embedding a profound life philosophy within every detail.

Capitalizing on the spatial height, the home utilizes varied ceiling levels, highlighted by a dramatic sloped roof in the living room that evokes a rustic countryside lodge. The soul of the design lies in authentic Japanese "Kumiko" woodwork. Three natural solid woods are meticulously layered to compose unique environmental narratives: "Sun and Mountain" brings warmth to the living-dining area; "Starry Sky" sparks romance in the daughter’s room; and "Bamboo Forest and Mountain" infuses the master suite with serene Zen, complemented by a tatami-patterned ceiling layout.

Beyond aesthetics, the manor masterfully integrates functional convenience into daily life. In the social zone, a bespoke mobile cinema projection cabinet dynamically glides to serve the tea room, dining space, or garden, breaking conventional boundaries. The versatile tatami tea room employs flexible Washi paper folding doors and a suspended solid-wood "Ichimai-ita" desk to seamlessly switch between private remote work and mindful tea tasting. Addressing local climate constraints, the dining room incorporates translucent Washi fiberboard windows that elegantly deflect harsh western sunlight while diffusing soft, ambient illumination.

For a true sensory escape, the guest bathroom features a custom solid-wood soaking tub imported directly from Japan. Paired with handcrafted diatom-mud walls and a soothing timber aroma, it offers an authentic, rejuvenating bathhouse experience. Finally, fully concealed storage eliminates visual clutter, maintaining absolute minimalist purity. This project is a flawless harmony of raw nature and modern utility, inviting inhabitants to rediscover a calm, simplified lifestyle.
