Morph is a sculptural table positioned at the intersection between furniture and sculpture. The piece explores how dense structural materials can be shaped to convey softness, tension, and balance while remaining stable and functional. It examines the visual paradox between weight and lightness, questioning how mass can be perceived as fluid through proportion, curvature, and surface articulation.
The base is formed from solid strained bamboo, shaped through an intensive process of carving and refinement. Rather than concealing the material’s inherent grain, the design works with it, allowing the directional fibres to articulate the surface and reinforce the sense of movement within the form. The resulting volume appears to drape under its own weight, as though gravity has acted upon a pliable mass. This visual softness contrasts with the structural performance required of the form, which must accommodate the cantilevered element above. The geometry is carefully calibrated to distribute load while maintaining a minimal footprint, creating a controlled equilibrium between support and suspension.
A circular brass surface introduces a precise geometric counterpoint to the organic base. Its restrained form establishes a dialogue between warm metal and natural fibre, balancing curvature with clarity. The top appears to hover lightly above the sculpted support, reinforcing a sense of equilibrium and controlled tension. The juxtaposition of material and geometry creates a subtle contrast between fluidity and precision.
Morph draws inspiration from natural erosion, fabric in motion, and the quiet transformation of materials under force. It approaches object making as a study of gravity and resistance, where structure and surface exist in constant dialogue. Light traces the concave and convex curves, shifting across the grain and revealing subtle changes in depth throughout the day. The piece reads differently from each viewpoint, alternating between weight and levity, solidity and suspension. In this way, Morph becomes not only a functional surface but a spatial presence that invites pause, movement, and close attention.
