Architectural Design - Mix Use Architectural Designs

Located in the heart of the Yale New Haven Forest, this mixed-use architecture project explores the delicate boundaries of natural interruption and spatial linkage. The forest's identity and primary economy are intrinsically tied to its native maple trees and maple syrup production. Designed as a symbiotic hub, the project seamlessly integrates housing and laboratory facilities for 24 resident researchers with immersive visitor programs, creating a environment where human activity and forest ecology grow together reciprocally.

Inspired by the existing maple tree tubing network used in syrup collection, the design translates a functional utility into an architectural pathway that fosters a shared communal experience among researchers, visitors, and wildlife. The central geometry features a circular path that branches off the original forest trails without disturbing their continuity, inviting people to extend their journey deeper into the landscape. The interior sanctuary bounded by this loop is dedicated as a protected habitat, preserving a thriving cohabitation zone for local birds, bees, maple trees, and other native species.

As visitors enter the site, the architecture offers multi-experiential routes: turning right leads into a linear gallery designed to educate the public on forest preservation and research, while turning left guides visitors to active sugar-making stations to observe the traditional syrup extraction and refining process in real-time. Deeper along the path, the facility features a forest-to-table bar and restaurant, where guests can sample culinary creations directly sourced from and produced by the surrounding forest. By unifying scientific research, ecological stewardship, and public engagement, the project elevates the maple syrup production system into a holistic architectural sanctuary that celebrates forest heritage.
