Sulfuric fire fishing is a traditional technique unique to Huanggang Harbor in Jinshan, New Taipei City. It serves as Taiwan’s last remaining vestige of the "maritime firelight" heritage. By mixing sulfur stones with water to produce acetylene gas, fishermen ignite a sudden, blazing flare accompanied by a thunderous crackle. This spectacle draws phototactic sardines to leap from the waves, where they are skillfully captured with hand-held dip nets. Performed on summer nights from May to September, this century-old craft is not merely a livelihood, but a manifestation of physical wisdom in harmony with the sea.
The video is centered around the concept of "A Flare Amidst the Night Sea," transforming the act of fishing into a visual narrative. It invites viewers to witness the living cultural heartbeat of the Jinshan fishing village. The stark contrast between the roaring flames and the silver scales creates a visceral realism that mirrors the actual experience of tourists on boat tours. When visitors see the fire rise and the fish churn in the light, they encounter the raw, stunning essence of sulfuric fire fishing exactly as captured on screen.
