The "Erosion Dining Table" was inspired by natural elements found in nature. The goal of the design is to create a piece that blends the boundaries between man-made beauty and nature beauty.
The overall construction of the table is made from White Ash sourced from New York and shipped to Japan. We used a bleached white oil finish to preserve the natural coloring of the wood. The design of the arching legs is inspired by architectural structure of the iconic “Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower”, which is located in Tokyo, Japan. The base is paired with an oval shaped top with smooth rounded edges, which gives this table a soft elegant look. Protruding through the center of the table is a volcanic stone which captures the viewer’s attention when entering the room. The inspiration behind this is to capture elements found in nature and incorporate them into the design of the table. This particular stone was found in one of the Zen Gardens, which can be found throughout Japan. A cast was taken of the stone and was rendered into a 3D modeling software to replicate the original stone. We then used a process called (GFRC) - (glass fiber reinforced concrete), to replicate the stone to a one-to-one scale.
This process also allows us to create a realistic stone making the piece more environmentally conscious, as we intend on preserving the elements found in nature for future generations. In conclusion, we wanted to design a table that embodies not only functionality and design, but art and beauty as well.
